Antigone

"Rising to the speed the flight of the white invaders
      Homeward in full retreat!

The army of Polynices was gathered against us,
In angry dispute his voice was lifted against us,
Like a ravening bird of prey he swooped around us
With white wings flashing, with flying plumes,
With armed hosts ranked in thousands," (117-112, Antigone)

In western culture white is often seen as a symbol of the heavens or of the gods. Why would they build up their enemy?

  1. Interesting technique in class starting with the "no-skimming" lesson. It was a great point that we all could use a reminder occasionally. As for the point you made regarding the use of white pertaining to the enemy, very sneaky! It would be incredibly easy to miss that, so I am glad you pointed it out. It shows the uniqueness of the writing technique and the separation from the norm. I'm excited to hear what else you found deep within the lines of Antigone.
