"Biff reaches behind the heater and draws out a length of rubber tubing. He is horrified and turns his head toward Will's room, still dimly lit," (48).
What does the tubing signify, and why would Biff care if he is so disconnected from his father?
I think that the rubber tubing signifies Willy's attempts to escape the day dreams and hallucinations that he experiences every day. Biff cares because even though he is disconnected from his father, he still loves him and doesn't want him to commit suicide. Biff also knows how much Willy's death would hurt Linda and Happy.
The tubing signifies suicide for Willy. "The insurance inspector came. He said that they have evidence. That all these accidents in the last year — weren't — weren't — accidents" (40). Linda is claiming that Willy has been attempting to committ suicide by crashing the car. Also as Linda inspects the gas pipe there is a "new little nipple" (41). Willy is also attempting suicide through the gas pipe. Biff feels a connection to his father as any son does, and every son wants to get the approval of his father. Even though Biff is seemingly disconnected, Willy is still his father, and the blood bond there provides a deep connection.
